A. Philip Randolph's motto "Freedom is never a final act, but a continuing evolving process." is a timely warning against complacency. Pivotal elections in 1998 and year 2000 will shape our lives for decades to come. Efforts to turn back the clock on racial progress, worker rights and a secure retirement demand an effective, sustained response. Every vote will count. Every volunteer can make a difference.
Seattle, WA - effective GOTV operation
APRI activists in Seattle know their political participation program makes a difference. They recruited nearly 250 volunteers, including students. Over 15,000 pieces of literature were passed out in low income projects, churches, neighborhood businesses, social service agencies and senior citizen centers. APRI volunteers also made 17,000 calls to remind voters of their polling places. APRl's effectiveness in Seattle was rewarded. Turnout in areas worked by APRI increased more than 20% over the average turnout in those same precincts (69.6% in 1996 compared to 57.2% in previous elections). Furthermore, non-partisan political activism has increased membership in the Seattle APRI Chapter.
